8th February 2024

Maldon District Council has just announced that the replacement of the Town Pontoon will be completed by the end of 2024.

The pontoon was badly damaged in February 2022, during Storm Eunice. The video above shows how the ‘hammerhead’, the seaward end of the pontoon, was stripped of all its decking during the storm, and how the main walkway was also badly damaged. The video was taken by local resident, Louise Soloway-Chan during the storm.

A spokesperson for Maldon District Council said; ‘The Council has been exploring a number of solutions for a replacement pontoon which can be delivered within budget whilst also providing an improved facility.

‘The Council is pleased to announce that a publicly accessible pontoon is on track to be installed by the end of this year and it will be delivered within budget using the money we have received from the Governments UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

‘The new pontoon will utilise the existing piles and be the same dimensions as the previous pontoon that was destroyed during storm Eunice and will benefit from additional safety features such as improved safety railings and a non-slip decking surface.

‘We will provide a further update as we get closer to an installation date.’
