Veterans Village community to offer real help for heroes |
| Essex County Council unveils new support for armed forces community as part of its 100-Day Plan.
The establishment of a dedicated housing community is being explored for ex-military personnel and their families in Essex. More than 4,000 enlisted servicemen and women and over 50,000 military veterans live in Essex. There has been a rise in veteran homelessness* nationally and there can be challenges for armed forces personnel adapting to civilian life. This can include gaining employment and securing housing. The Essex Veterans Village would provide:
The commitment comes as part of the county council’s 100-Day Plan. Councillor Peter Harris, Leader of Essex County Council, said: “The bravery and sacrifice of our large armed forces community in Essex cannot be overstated. The least we can do as a society is ensure proper access to housing, services and opportunities to those who have given so much.” Councillor Terry Longstaff, Essex County Council’s Armed Forces Champion, said: “The Veterans Village is one of the standout commitments in our 100-Day Plan. I look forward to working closely with colleagues and the armed forces community over the coming days to see how we can make this idea a reality.” |
