Stop Means Stop!

New campaign brings awareness to the dangers at school crossings in Essex.

A campaign is being launched to help protect school crossing patrollers, parents and children across Essex.

The campaign will run from Monday 17 March for a week led by Speed Watch, the Parking Partnership and Essex County Council.

The three organisations will visit schools across the county during the week, starting at Robert Drake School in Benfleet.

Councillor Tony Ball, Cabinet Member for Education Excellence, Life Long Learning and Employability, said “Every morning and afternoon, dedicated men and women help children and parents safely cross the road outside schools across Essex.

“The School Crossing Patrol service was established in 1953. I can’t imagine there is anyone who went to school in England that doesn’t recognise the patrollers with their distinctive signs and friendly smiles.”

“Most motorists stop when requested and wait for pedestrians to cross the road. Unfortunately some think their journey is more important and refuse to stop, or drive through while children are crossing.

“Not stopping puts the lives of children, their parents and the school crossing patrol at risk.

“Failing to stop for a school crossing patrol is an offence. It could result in a fine of up to £1000 and points added to a driver’s licence.

“Our SCPs will always try wherever possible to reduce congestion. Please be patient, it’s only a few seconds out of your day. Remember STOP means STOP.”

School Crossing Patroller Stephen said “I love my job, I find it really rewarding.

“The children I help cross the road make me smile with the funny comments they come out with; they call me the odd sock lollipop man.

“I’d really like all drivers to respect the fact all I’m doing is getting children safely to school, please stop when I ask and please park safely near the school”
