Burnham’s seawall outfalls – which drain rain and flood water from the quay into the river – are being upgraded by the Environment Agency.

The outfalls feature heavy flaps that stop the  spring tide water from going up the pipe and flooding onto the quay.

Work begins from 10th June.

It remains to be seen whether the new version of outflow flap will allow a famous local trick to continue. Local pranksters have often convinced visitors to the quay who are standing by a drain that someone is trapped under the grill – they do this by hiding on the other side of the seawall and calling for help up the outflow pipe….
