Today’s kite festival, organised by Burnham-on-Crouch Town Council, was declared a great success by many of the hundreds of residents and visitors that attended.
Helped by perfect sunny weather with a cooling breeze to lift the kites, the Kite Festival is the second organised by the Town Council, after a local resident suggested holding one last year.
Councillors and local volunteers helped children construct and colour their kites – over 180 were given away until, out of stock, the helpers showed children and parents how to make their own kites from a kit of parts.
In the meantime local charity, the WW1 Aviation Heritage Trust, which keeps a couple of WW1 biplanes at Stow Maries aerodrome, raised money for keeping the fighters in the air and for their educational programme, selling professional kites, some of which were donated.
Essex Wildlife Trust were on hand to tell people about the importance of supporting local wild habitats.
The largest kites were provided by the East Anglian Kite flyers, who flew their massive constructions over a roped-off area, for safety reasons.
Deputy Mayor Cllr Diane Carter led a team of litter pickers and the entire event was led by Town Mayor Cllr Fiona Clegg, who received congratulations from local residents, including comments such as ‘fantastic!’ ‘marvellous’ and ‘brilliant; just brilliant’.
Entertainment and public announcements were provided by Peter May.
