| Essex businesses urged to help young learners by donating unused tech |
| Essex County Council is inviting donations of unused technology from local businesses.
Essex County Council’s efforts to bridge the digital divide have taken a step forward thanks to a significant donation of unused technology from Mid and South Essex NHS. The council has been inviting local businesses to donate unused devices with the aim of tackling digital exclusion in the county. More than 200 devices have been donated by Mid and South Essex NHS. The donated laptops and tablets are refurbished and given to children in Essex. The goal is to equip young learners, including those who are eligible to receive free school meals, to help them learn, connect and succeed. Currently, one in five Essex residents is offline. Many families don’t have access to technology, the internet, or the skills for today’s world. Councillor Louise McKinlay, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Communities, Economic Growth, and Prosperity, said: “This is a fantastic initiative that’s helping to close the digital divide across Essex. This campaign will ensure children have access to the digital tools they need, not just to learn, but to thrive in today’s digital world. Every device donated is a step toward greater opportunity, inclusion and support for families who need it most.” Dr Sophia Morris, System Clinical Lead for Health Inequalities at NHS Mid and South Essex, said: “We’re pleased to support this project by donating laptops, tablets, and phones to children in Essex. These devices will help children learn to use technology. This will give them access to digital health tools and improve their wellbeing. By working together, we can ensure all children have equal opportunities to be healthy and succeed.” Essex County Council is now calling on more businesses to join this effort. The aim is to reach 4,000 donations by June 2026. To find out how to donate devices and support local communities, visit essex.gov.uk/device-donations or email device.donation@essex.gov.uk. |
