Last year’s Kite Festival in Burnham was a great success

Burnham Town Council is organising two free events in Burnham’s Riverside Park this August.

A third has had to be cancelled.

Sunday 11 August  sees the return of the Kite Festival, which runs from midday to 4pm. This first occurred last year in response to a request from a member of the public and was very successful.

This year the East Anglian Kite Fliers will be back to display their giant, colourful, tethered kites, which create a wonderful aerial spectacle.

Children will be given a free kite to colour-in and will also be able to make their own kite from recycled material, with the help of councillors and other volunteers. Help will be on hand if you have never flown a kite before.

Feel free to bring your own kites, but please don’t bring stunt kites which can be very fast and somewhat risky.

The Essex Wildlife Trust will be there to share what they do and let you know how you can help wildlife in our wonderful area, and the WW1 Aviation Heritage Trust will be selling kites to raise much-needed funds.

Picnic in the Park

Quay Day is on 26 August, that is, the Bank Holiday Monday after the first weekend of Burnham Week.

This event is now organised by the yacht clubs, but the council is helping out by putting on a Picnic in the Park, a fun, family day with children’s races and games. The Picnic in the Park also marks 200 years of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution – and crew and staff from our local lifeboat station will be coming along, unless, of course, there is a ‘shout’ and they have to zoom off to rescue a mariner in distress.

On both days there will be plenty on offer to eat and drink and music from local DJ Peter May will provide further entertainment.

As per last year, food vendors at both events will be asked to make a contribution towards the Council’s costs.

Tidal Rave Festival

You may have heard that the first Saturday of Burnham Week was going to feature a festival of modern music on West Quay.

This has had to be cancelled after Maldon District Council raised security and safety concerns, – it was thought the event could attract 2000 people or more.

Councillors will be reviewing this project carefully to see if a way can be found to make it work for next year.
